Vesper Public Relations. Los Angeles, CA. (July 2025) –El Sushi Loco, named “Best Mexican Sushi” by LA Weekly, is gearing up to celebrate

This comes on the heels of restaurateur and El Sushi Loco creator Frank Mendoza’s return from Japan where he spent weeks studying at the famous Tokyo Sushi Academy learning from Itame (a sushi master) to become an official Shokunin (sushi artisan).

International Sushi Day was created for one simple reason – to encourage people everywhere to eat and love sushi more. Southeast Asians developed the original type of sushi, which consisted of fish wrapped in souring, and fermenting rice. The dish then spread to southern China before reaching Japan. Sushi now has its versions throughout the world, including the Mexican-style sushi that has blossomed in Sinaloa, Mexico, and now in Southern California.

About El Sushi Loco

The brainchild of Frank Mendoza, El Sushi Loco is a place to bond with family and a lively place to hang out with friends. El Sushi Loco may be the truest expression of East meets West, with tastes and textures both exotic and familiar. The flavors and ambiance provide the perfect place for a festive and tasty lunch or dinner.

El Sushi Loco History

Frank Mendoza purchased a street vendor food cart from a Craigslist ad. He paid $1200 and began selling his unique cuisine on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Mexican sushi is not your usual street food and was a hard sell to both Tijuana’s tourists and locals. The undeniably unique taste required a unique population of foodies for Frank Mendoza’s dreams to be fulfilled. In 2010 Mendoza pushed his cart across the border and into the United States, eventually setting up shop on the streets of Los Angeles. In its food-cart days, the Mexican-Asian fusion food concept was called Sushi Island, and Frank Mendoza, his wife, and his nephew developed the brand tirelessly, serving high-quality Mexican sushi and mariscos.
