Chef Frank Mendoza celebrates the holiday with a fun new addition to his menu, the El Sushi Loco Sushi Push Pop!
Vesper Public Relations. Los Angeles, CA. (June 2026) –El Sushi Loco is gearing up to celebrate International Sushi Day on Thursday, June 18.
Innovative restaurateur and traditionally trained sushi chef Frank Mendoza – who studied in Japan to become an official “Shokunin” (sushi artisan) – celebrates International Sushi Day with a new fun addition to his menu of unique Mexican sushi rolls, the El Sushi Loco Sushi Pop!
“International Sushi Day was created for one simple reason, to encourage people everywhere to eat and love sushi” – says Chef Mendoza. “And I can’t think a more fun and playful way of eating sushi than in a push pop.”
Chef Frank Mendoza, who first blended the flavors and textures of his native Sinaloa, Mexico to Japan’s most recognized dish as a means of inspiring family, friends and neighbors to share his love of sushi, is always on the lookout for ways to new bring new faces to his restaurants.
Returning recently from Japan where he spent weeks studying at the famous Tokyo Sushi Academy, Chef Mendoza took some heat for his Mexican Asian fusion concepts.
“Whether you are young, or old, but young at heart, I want you to have a spirited time at my restaurants,” – states Chef Mendoza, and laughingly adds. “After all, I’m the guy who got yelled at by my Itame (sushi master) when he learned of my bacon and hot dog sushi rolls,”

The brainchild of Frank Mendoza, El Sushi Loco is a place to bond with family and a lively place to hang out with friends. El Sushi Loco may be the truest expression of East meets West, with tastes and textures both exotic and familiar. The flavors and ambiance provide the perfect place for a festive and tasty lunch or dinner.
El Sushi Loco History
Frank Mendoza purchased a street vendor food cart from a Craigslist ad. He paid $1200 and began selling his unique cuisine on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Mexican sushi is not your usual street food and was a hard sell to both Tijuana’s tourists and locals. The undeniably unique taste required a unique population of foodies for Frank Mendoza’s dreams to be fulfilled. In 2010 Mendoza pushed his cart across the border and into the United States, eventually setting up shop on the streets of Los Angeles. In its food-cart days, the Mexican-Asian fusion food concept was called Sushi Island, and Frank Mendoza, his wife, and his nephew developed the brand tirelessly, serving high-quality Mexican sushi and mariscos.
