MADD SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO HOST 5th ANNUAL TIE ONE ON FOR SAFETY® GALA — Special guest speaker Adam Vanek, MADD Chief Operating Officer —

***MEDIA ADVISORY***

WHAT:              Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) Southern California will host their 5th Annual MADD Tie One On for Safety® gala on Thursday, November 21st to kick-off a safe 2019 holiday season at the Hotel Maya in the City of Long Beach.  MADD will recognize and honor outstanding community heroes for their years of dedication in saving lives, implementing healthy lifestyle choices and guiding youth toward a better future. Adam Vanek, MADD Chief Executive Officer, will be this year’s honorary guest speaker.

The holidays are among the most dangerous times on our nation’s roadways, with more people traveling, an increased number of events where alcohol is served, and a surge in drunk driving. Between 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve through New Year’s Eve in 2018, there were 1,068 lives lost to drunk driving across the country, accounting for 29 percent of all traffic deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With so many options today such as Uber, taxis, public transportation and alcohol-free friends or family members, there is no excuse to drink and drive.

Drivers can show their commitment to designating a non-drinking driver and support of law enforcement’s efforts to protect the roads by displaying a MADD Tie One On for Safety red ribbon or magnetic decal on their vehicles available at the MADD Southern California office in Westminster, CA.

The timing of MADD’s Tie One On for Safety campaign is significant because on October 31, 2019, 20-year-old driver from Long Beach, allegedly was driving under the influence when he plowed into a family of three near Los Cerritos Park. All three family members died from their injuries at the hospital. As a result of this crash, it heightens the need of MADD’s Tie One On for Safety campaign and address the ripple effects of driving impaired.
