Vesper Public Relations. Los Angeles, CA. (June 2020) –El Sushi Loco, named “Best Mexican Sushi” by LA Weekly, is gearing up to celebrate International Sushi Day on June 18.
International Sushi Day was created for one simple reason – to encourage all around the world to eat and love more sushi. Southeast Asians developed the original type of sushi, which consisted of fish wrapped in souring, fermenting rice. The dish then spread to southern China before reaching Japan. Sushi now has its own versions throughout the world, including the Mexican-style sushi that has blossomed in Sinaloa, Mexico and now in Southern California.
With COVID-19 cases, and social distancing orders easing, pioneering chef/founder Francisco Mendoza proudly announces the limited re-opening of his restaurants to dine-in service. Of course all El Sushi Loco restaurants will also continue to offer takeout service and practice anti pandemic safety procedures. Hours will be in accordance with any and all city and state curfews if applicable. Otherwise hours are from 12 to 8 pm.
This past weekend in response to the Corona Virus Pandemic —- El Sushi Loco Restaurant in partnership with Works of Power Inc, (a non-profit organization) provided free food and groceries to senior citizens and families impacted by COVID-19 in the Pomona Valley, California. El Sushi Loco also honored its first responders such as police officers, firefighters, health care workers and hospital staff with free meals.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us. A fancy meal won’t heal the pain and loss that we’ve all felt in these first months of the new year. Everyone at El Sushi Loco can only hope that their gastronomical creations can bring a little bit of joy back to your lives. Be safe, wear masks in public, wash your hands often and check in with your family, friends, and neighbors.
Like many restaurant owners, Mendoza remains committed to the health and well-being of his customers and community. He assures that he and his staff will follow all CDC, DSE, and DPH food handling safety protocols, as well as continue to practice social distancing.

El Sushi Loco History
Frank Mendoza purchased a street vendor food cart off a Craigslist add. He paid $1200 and begun selling his unique cuisine on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Mexican sushi, is not your usual street-food and was a hard sell to both Tijuana’s tourists and locals. The undeniably unique taste required a unique population of foodies for Frank Mendoza’s dreams to be fulfilled. In 2010 Mendoza pushed his cart across the border and into the United States, eventually setting up shop on the streets of Los Angeles. In its food-cart days, the Mexican-Asian fusion food concept was called Sushi Island and Frank Mendoza, his wife, and his nephew developed the brand tirelessly, serving high quality Mexican sushi and mariscos.
The success of Sushi Island further fueled Mendoza’s desire and he renamed the business El Sushi Loco. 2011 saw the opening of their first brick and mortar restaurant in La Puente. Soon after, they opened another branch in Downey, and most recently Mendoza opened his third restaurant in Pomona, CA.
