“One Way Ticket to TJ” is written in Spanish and narrates the story of a woman who’s tired of living and working in the United States and decides to return to Mexico with her family. It features rhythms typical of the U.S./Mexico border and the magical harmonies of the female members of The Mexican Standoff, who wrote the song in Tijuana while promoting their previous single “Muro”.
About The Mexican Standoff:
The Mexican Standoff is a socially conscious band with a comedic twist comprised of producers, performers and songwriters from the L.A. Latin Alternative scene. Creators of the viral video “El Corrido de Benjamin Ramirez” aka “El Elotero,” they play folk music from the border, sing in both English and Spanish and show people a good time in these tough times. The members of the Mexican Standoff are accomplished musicians in their own right. Recent show highlights include headlining the opening night of Spaceland in the Levitt Pavillion Summer Series and performing at Echo Park Rising.

Lyrics: “One Way Ticket to TJ” (With English Translation)
Este sueño Americano no es como lo pintan
(This American Dream isn’t what they make it out to be)
Este sueño Americano es una pesadilla
(This American Dream is a nightmare)
Mucho trabajo poco “hangueo”, el dinero que me queda
(A lot of work, not much free time, and the money that’s left over)
Solo me alcanza para McDonald’s y a veces pa’ las chelas
(Is only sufficient for McDonald’s and occasionally for beer)
Ya estoy hasta la madre
(I’m fed up)
De tantos biles tanta renta que pagar
(With too many bills and rent to pay)
Mejor me regreso pa mi tierra
(I better return to my land)
México lindo mi tierra natal
(Beautiful Mexico, my homeland)
One way ticket to
One way ticket to
One way ticket to TJ
Busco trabajo limpiando casas
(I look for work cleaning houses)
Y en el fin de semana
(And during the weekends)
De costurera, de cocinera
(as a tailor and as a cook)
Le jalo donde pueda
(I work wherever I can)
Allá en mi pueblo
(There in my town)
No necesitan matarse en el trabajo
(You don’t need kill yourself working)
Viven tranquilos, viven la vida
(They live peacefully, they live the life)
Y todos en familia
(And everyone with family)
Ya estoy hasta la madre
(I’m fed up)
De tantos biles tanta renta que pagar
(With too many bills and rent to pay)
Mejor me regreso pa mi tierra
(I better return to my land)
México lindo mi tierra natal
(beautiful Mexico, my homeland)
One way ticket to
One way ticket to
One way ticket to TJ
