About Celia Cruz

A trailblazing woman proud of her heritage through lyrics and colorful African stage costumes, Celia Cruz had an incredible sense of fashion (immortalized by an exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum), and was well known for supporting her fellow musicians. “She was a very sweet woman,” More recalls, “extremely humble and with an incredible memory. One thing I’ll always remember about her is that I always opened her shows with three or four of my own songs and she would always have a stellar introduction for me for her audience.”

With over 50 albums recorded of which more than 20 reached Gold status, and with a career that garnered 3 GRAMMYâ Awards and 4 Latin GRAMMY® wins, Celia Cruz was a symbol of Salsa itself and the ultimate icon of Cuban music and culture. The singer received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Smithsonian, and the National Medal of Arts, presented to her by President Bill Clinton. She also appeared in several films in addition to being a legendary figure in the music industry and one of the only women in Salsa.
