Vesper Public Relations. Los Angeles, CA. June 2019. For the first time ever, salsa legends El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico and Los Van Van de Cuba will perform together on Thursday, June 20 in Los Angeles, CA at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. The concert is part of El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico’s 57th anniversary tour and the 50th anniversary tour of Los Van Van. With over 100 combined years of musical history, this meeting of the minds is gearing up to be a historical event.
Led by pianist and musical director Rafael Ithier, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is one of Puerto Rico’s most acclaimed dance bands. Four decades after their inception, the 13-piece salsa group continues to inspire dancers with its horn-punctuated Latin rhythms and lush vocal harmonies.
Los Van Van is one of the most influential bands in the history of 20th century Cuban music. Founded by bassist Juan Formell in 1969, the band is currently led by Formell’s son, Samuel Formell. Los Van Van transformed Cuban popular music, building from the basis of the charanga tradition, but adding drum set, electric bass and synthesizers, and a healthy dose of funk, soul and rock ‘n’ roll to the mix.
