A Night of Global Beats at The Conga Room featuring Balkan Beat Box + Soulico

KCRW darling Tijuana Mexico songstress Ceci Bastida joins Soulico as a special guest!

“Balkan Beat Box puts me in the mind of a really wild East European wedding where klezmer music plays and dancers party on the tabletops. Saxophones and percussionists double up to create a dizzying whirl of sound, broken up by fractured guitar solos that flirt with atonality.” – Chicago Tribune

“Soulico rock dizzying sets that command you to dance in the languages of almost every continent.”  – Washington Post

LOS ANGELES, Calif. Monday February 7, 2011.  In a night of global beats, on Wednesday February 23, 2011 starting at 8 p.m., The Conga Room welcomes two internationally renowned recording artists, Balkan Beat Box and Soulico.  Plus KCRW darling Tijuana Mexico songstress Ceci Bastida will join Soulico in a special guest performance, together in one night that promises to be a crowd-soaring dance show.  Tickets are available now at www.congaroom.com.

Expect Balkan Beat Box (aka BBB) to take you on a musical journey starting in Tel-Aviv and leading you to Belgrade for Roma gypsy rhythms, where BBB mined the region for the raw, uncut Balkan soul sound. The collective will be performing music from its new album, Blue Eyed Black Boy (available on Nat Geo Music),  which marks the return of Ori Kaplan, Tamir Muskat and Tomer Yosef, the BBB team that created an entirely new sound: Equal parts Balkan-Mediterranean tradition, punk intensity, electronic cool, jazz discipline and hip-hop swagger – all taken to the next level and utterly exhilarating and emotionally dazzling.

Although BBB has been traveling the world recently, the group still retains a very New York attitude: “We can create the BBB sound anywhere – it can be in outer space – as long as the three of us are together in a room,” says Ori. “But we’re definitely still a New York band, it’s where we first got together, where we had our education, our success, everything that defines us.”

Meanwhile, the DJ collective Soulico, from Tel Aviv – Sabbo of Mad Decent fame, Rob, Shimmy Sonic and Wido – will combine their trademark eclectic blends of energy-charged beats with a masterful fusion of everything from hip-hop and dancehall to Israeli folk and disco music. Soulico has garnered incredible respect and critical acclaim both for its original songs and the group’s unique mash-ups that blend Israeli dope grooves and Jewish melodies with American hip-hop tracks, garnering rave reviews from the hipsterati in LA and NYC, and doing the same throughout Europe for the collective’s deep dance vibes. Soulico will perform songs from its current release on Jdub Records, “Exotico On The Speaker”.

As special guest performance with Soulico is Tijuana Mexico native,  Latin GRAMMY ® nominee, KCRW darling Ceci Bastida previously known for her work with Latin music star Julieta Venegas, and legendary alternative band Tijuana NO. Bastida has cemented her reputation as an in-demand Los Angeles club favorite, with her songs featured on influential programs on KCRW, KEXP and on Mexico City’s taste-making Reactor. Ceci Bastida grew up in Tijuana, near the beach, but lives in Los Angeles now.
