Universal City, CA – Thursday August 13, 2009 – It’s been an incredible summer thus far as Telemundo and mun2’s “Descarga” free concert series at CityWalk has certainly proven its appeal as one of the premiere free outdoor events in Southern California, gathering thousands of fans each week since its kick-off last month to sounds as diverse as the cultural mosaic of the city.
On this fifth show of “Descarga”, international pop sounds will be plentiful, featuring: Colombian songstress Fanny Lu, So Cal-based songstresses Melissa y Su West Coast Swing, Denise and the renowned Mucho Wednesdays DJs ‘Pitxu’,‘Frank Leopold’ (Remixer) & ‘Noir’ on Sunday, August 16, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Colombian Pop songstress Fanny Lu is already garnering much acclaimed success thanks to her unique brand of pop. Her breakthrough single “Tu No Eres Para Mi” remained on the #1 spot on Billboard’s Latin chart for three consecutive weeks, while her second single “Celos” is already following in the footsteps of her previous chart-topper and her single “Dos” is already taking the Mexico music charts by surprise. This success landed Fanny Lu the opportunity to be the opening act on Latin super star Luis Fonsi’s tour earlier this year. The Colombian beauty has also received multiple Latin GRAMMY©, Latin Billboard nominations to name only a few.
Melissa, of Melissa y Su West Coast Swing, started her singing career at the age of 18 in local venues where she built a loyal following. After capturing the eye of a popular and talented salsa director, she began performing with his band, developing her love of salsa and other Latin rhythms further. She ventured into many projects, singing with her brother’s band (with which she performed at the Verizon Amphitheater, opening for Marc Anthony, Chayanne, Laura Pausini, Alejandro Fernandez and Marco Antonio Solis), then singing with other R&B and Top 40 bands and the Sonora Dinamita. She created Melissa y Su West Coast Swing as her very own band, with original and expressive songs. The WCS offers a different and modern twist to the L.A. salsa scene, combining an energetic salsa beat and R&B feel, along with Melissa’s unique and impressive vocals, captivating audiences from coast to coast.http://www.myspace.com/melissasalsa
Denise, another “Descarga” addition, is an experienced and versatile actress and vocalist. Numerous newspapers like The Los Angeles Times and The Boston Tribune have written about her talent and “ethereal voice”, and applauded her onstage abilities. Denise’s vocal versatility has been fostered since an early age, and she expertly sings classical music, pop, rock, jazz and R&B. Her career includes the show, Selena Forever (she sang Tejano music) and the starring role of Zoé in Cirque du Soleil’s production of Quidam. During the tour, Denise trained with the company and learned contortions in silk and other acrobatics. After the North American tour, Denise stayed with Cirque du Soleil and toured throughout Japan in 2003. www.denisegonzalez.com
Joining the party once again are the renowned Mucho Wednesdays DJs, Frank Leopold, DJ Pitxu and Noir! Since joining the Mucho family, Frank Leopold has remixed several songs for artists like Pilar Diaz, DJ Pitxu has been asked to spin his Spanish pop at various L.A. hot spots and Noir is known for his incredible ‘guilt free’ Pop sensibilities. Together they work the turntables Mucho Wednesday’s, spinning classic Spanish pop as well as the latest dance tracks that are coming out of the Latin alternative scene. www.myspace.com/muchoparty
Now in its 3rd consecutive year “Descarga” has solidified its status as one of the leading free outdoor music events in Southern California, drawing over 70,000 fans by showcasing international, national, and emerging talent as well as DJ performances on an outdoor stage in CityWalk. Since its inception in 2007, “Descarga” continues to build on its overwhelming success by delivering on its mission: to provide Latino artists and audiences with the best in quality entertainment with a phenomenal promotional platform and, in this way, becoming ‘the must play concert series’ for Latino artists touring in Southern California.
