Biggest Surprise!…The Best (And Worst) of SXSW 2009

A SXSW 09 “Aha!” moments…ABOUT.COM/PUNK MUSIC.COM

(New York Times music portal):

COSMOPOLiTAN – This three-piece party band from Mexico was a band we stumbled into while heading to see This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb. Guitar, drums and a laptop mixed with matching pleather Elvis suits are a combination that makes for an instant electronic dance party.

***

If Laibach had been from Mexico and been outwardly happy instead of being German, dark and silly, they may have been Cosmopolitan. Cosmopolitan represents one of those SXSW “Aha!” moments; a band you just stumble upon, not realizing how much amazing music is out there until you find it. (…) Three guys, in matching outfits perched somewhere between Elvis and Devo, hammering out amazing electroclash with just a guitar, drums and about 800 million onstage controlled effects. It was fun and heavy at the same time. Generally, if you’ve dug industrial, ever, from Kraftwerk, through Wax Trax through Atari Teenage Riot, Cosmopolitan plays it, and strips off a bit of the dark to make it fun. They had the whole patio dancing and having a good time, without an ounce of pretension, which is sometimes something that electro bands really need to drop.

SourPop Records. Los Angeles, Monday May 18, 2009.Direct from the scorching desert terrain of Hermosillo Sonora Mexico COSMOPOLiTAN comes crashing full throttle to Los Angeles after incredible accolades from their performance at SXSW 2009 (South By South West 2009).

This three piece party band will be performing at The Los Angeles Rock & Roll Music Conference on Thursday June 4, 2009 at House of Blues/Sunset &  Saturday June 6th will be performing LIVE in concert at KPFK Travel Tips For Aztlan (90.7 FM & the world kpfk.org) studios at 10 PM.

What can audiences expect? a definite party band, fun, ironic, sardonic songs that speak about being on the brink of extreme madness, just as our conscious, apparently moral, but in the darkness …degenerate and sick”.

COSMOPOLiTAN ‘s new album “EP Machine” is now available for {physical} release in Mexico under Iguana Records/SourPop Records and in the United States & World in {digital} format under SourPop Records distributed by IODA.

Their newly released “EP Machine” was recorded by Diego Solorzano (Mexican indie rock band Los Dynamite) in Mexico City, produced by Rene Zemog (SourPop Records) and Edgar Lizarraga and mastered in Quebec, Canada at  Gray Market Mastering.

The EP features 5 newly recorded cuts: “Hands Stereo Disco”, “Hey C’Mon”, “Just Give Me Bichola”, “Miss HTML’ and “Don’t Stop Dancing Disco” plus 5 sick remixes of “Hey C’Mon” created by renowned international DJ’s: Dan Oh (Dim Mak) from Los Angeles, Moog Conspiracy (elektrotribe / cobalt / olaris) from Berlin, Detect and Blende (Mental Groove) from France and Ryan Justin from Los Angeles.

The songs’ lyrics speak about the band’s personal take on society’s status quo that is imposed in our life styles which has made human a target of conventionalisms and stereotypes.

Although COSMOPOLiTAN is not seeking to generate critical upheaval, their goal is to create a sarcastic & sardonic stand through their lyrics, examples such as “Miss HTML:, a story of a woman who abuses the different forms of communication and contact with people through Internet, which causes her to live in a parallel reality of ironic fantasies. While the song “Just Give Me Bichola” talks about the sexual diversity and the liberty to choose whatever you want, here in our region {la bichola} is the penis.

COSMOPOLiTAN is a definite party band and to be on the extremes such as in songs: “Don’t Stop Dancing Disco”, “Hands Stereo Disco” and “Hey C’mon” which speak about how dysfunctional relationships and how sexuality has become more important than true feelings, and how much sex is being sold to as ‘express relations’, that in fact we don’t love we only want sex & excess.
